Keep an Eye on Big Kids

May 18, 2011

Children experience rapid development, both physically and mentally, as they enter their school years. It's up to you to instill smart decision-making.

  • Use a booster seat for children whose weight or height is above the forward-facing limit for their car seat. Many big kids aren't big enough to do without a booster seat. This should be used until the "adult-size" vehicle lap-and-shoulder seat belt fits properly-typically when children have reached 4 feet 9 inches n height and are between 8 and 12 years of age.
  • Keep them safe from burns when they're serving themselves. Do not allow them to use a microwave or stove at this age because of the risk of fires and serious burns.
